Depression and comorbidity

Depression is usually treated as an isolated problem. During treatment, other circumstances that also affect your mood and mental health are often forgotten. As a result, many do not recover sufficiently from the depression, making relapse likely.

During your treatment, it is therefore very important that all aspects are included in your plan. In our treatment center, we therefore look at a combination of your biological factors, psychological factors and sociological factors. Here you can think about genetic vulnerability, constitution, diseases, medication and substance use, for example. Psychological factors include personality, coping style and trauma. Social factors may involve relationships, family, work, hobbies, daily activities, finances and housing.

How is depression treated at U-center?

Therapy depression

To treat your depression, we always start with a careful intake. This way we try to get to the bottom of things and take a good look at the factors that influence your depression. Once this is clear, we can tailor the treatment to your situation. Examples of treatments we offer are during your admission to our clinic:

Psycho-education
When treating your depression, we always offer psychoeducation. In this way you learn what exactly your depression is, how it came about and what influences your mood symptoms at that moment. We also ensure a good rhythm in your day by eating and sleeping at set times. For example, your treatments start daily at the same time and the internet in the treatment center goes off in the evening to encourage a healthy regularity.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
During this therapy, you will learn to deal with certain situations differently through exercises. We discuss and treat the behavior that maintains your depression in this cognitive behavioral therapy. The therapy focuses on taking a good look at your symptoms or problems and transforming this into constructive thoughts and actions.
Schematherapy (Schema Focused Therapy).
Schematherapy helps you break through existing patterns of behavior. By gaining insight into your depressive disorder, you learn to understand and change the origins of these patterns. During schema therapy, we work with your behaviors, thoughts and feelings so that you learn to better recognize your own needs and take better care of yourself.
Depression treatment with e-health
We use e-health modules before, during and after your treatment. Through these modules you gain insight into your own thoughts and functioning. These modules contain exercises and additional information about, for example, a healthy lifestyle, the influence of exercise or sleep problems. After completing your treatment in the treatment center, you can further apply these exercises in your daily life.
Future development plan and depression
Preventing a possible relapse is just as important as a good recovery from your depression. During treatment at U-center you will therefore work on your personal future development plan. In this way you learn to identify your pitfalls early on and take what you have learned into practice.

What to do about depression

Are you suffering from severe symptoms of depression? Then always make an appointment with your family doctor. He or she can give you help and advice and is the first point of contact for psychological problems. The family doctor can also refer you to U-center when you need intensive treatment.

Preventing depression

Depression can sometimes be difficult to recognize and expresses itself differently in everyone. If you suffer from sleep problems and a depressed mood for an extended period of time, it is important to know what you can do to reduce your symptoms. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to reduce your symptoms. For example, a healthy diet has a great influence on your mood, but your daily schedule, exercise and relaxation also contribute to it.
