What does addiction mean?

An addiction often dominates all aspects of your life has negative consequences in your daily life and for your health. This is because when you are addicted you are constantly engaged in a particular drug or behavior. You know it is bad for you, yet you cannot stop. Repetition of the behavior or use of a substance creates a certain pattern in your behavior. This pattern is very difficult to break and almost always requires professional help.

How does addiction work?

Addiction often involves mental dependence and physical dependence. In mental dependence, you feel like you can't live without it and feel a constant craving for a drug or behavior. Physical dependence occurs when your body has become accustomed to a drug or behavior. When you try to stop, your body starts to protest and you experience withdrawal symptoms, such as chills, sweating or anxiety. This mental and physical dependence makes it very difficult to quit, and the chances of relapse are often high.

How do you recognize addiction?

Recognizing an addiction

With addiction, you are dealing with a strong craving for certain behaviors or substances. Not everyone who regularly uses alcohol or drugs is an addict. We speak of an addiction only when you no longer have a grip on over the use of these substances. There are two different forms of addiction. You can be addicted to substances or to behaviors.

Substance addiction

Substance dependence usually occurs when using alcohol and drugs. For example, with drugs, you may be addicted to speed, heroin, cocaine, marijuana or tobacco. You may also be dealing with drug addiction (with or without a prescription) when you develop a dependence for a drug. This usually occurs with sedatives (diazepam, oxazepam, valium), sleep aids and painkillers.

Addiction to behavior

It is also possible that you are addicted to certain behaviors. With a behavioral addiction, you constantly feel the urge to perform a certain behavior, such as gambling, gaming or watching porn. When you suffer from a behavioral addiction, you never have enough and this behavior becomes a compulsive act. Your feelings and thoughts are determined by this behavior.

This dependence can range from mild to severe or chronic behavior. We speak of a behavioral addiction when you start exhibiting the same behavior more and more or for longer periods of time. You can no longer stop and the behavior essentially becomes an obsession. This often has negative consequences for your personal care, your relationships and your work or school.

Addiction and comorbidity

Addiction almost never comes alone and often accompanies a mental health disorder, such as depression, personality disorder or PTSD. You may also be dealing with more than one type of addiction. When you have several diagnoses at the same time we speak of comorbidity. In some cases the addiction arises from the mental illness and in other cases the other way around. It is not always easy to distinguish which of these diagnoses is the cause of the other diagnosis.
